Module H83CPD

This module is concerned with the design of specialty chemicals and products, as opposed to commodity chemicals. Most of the old chemical industries now take part in product design, and it is increasingly important for chemical engineers to be aware of the issues. Products that will be considered can range from pharmaceuticals through to microstructured materials such as paints and sun-block lotions through to actual products such as anti-rusting exhausts and oxygen supplies.

The module covers a four phase design sequence. The first phase is about identifying consumer needs and turnign them into product specifications. The second phase is concerned with the generation and pre-selection of ideas to fulfil the needs. The third phase uses scientific tools and risk assessment to perform final product selection. The last phase is concerned with manufacturing issues relevant to the product.

The module is based on the Chemical Product Design textbook by Cussler and Moggridge.
As of 2012 I am no longer teaching this course.
